Open source software can be a cost effective solution for many of today’s IT needs. While open source software often provides cutting edge solutions, it can still be a robust and stable enterprise-class solution. It also has the added benefit of reduced commercial license costs. However, it may be difficult to know how to get started using a non-commercial product or to know the avenues for support after implementation.

Sun Microsystems, Inc., creator of Java and champion of a variety of open source products, has partnered with ITenterprises to develop an open source collaboration lab at ITe. This space provides workstations, servers, open source software, and expertise to clients wanting to explore the benefits of open source software.

By using equipment outside of their existing IT infrastructure, businesses can test these solutions in a low-risk environment. Personnel from ITe, Sun and the UM-St. Louis campus can even assist clients who need some additional expertise to start exploring what today’s open source software can accomplish. Sun and other vendors can even provide ongoing support for these open source solutions.
